Why Small Things Set You Off When the Big Things Don’t

You can hold a boardroom together through a crisis. You can absorb a failed deal, a hostile negotiation, a quarter that misses, and stay measured. So it makes no sense that the dishwasher left open, or a short reply from your partner, or someone merging into your lane, is the thing that tips you over.

If you are a high performer, this is one of the most disorienting patterns you can experience. The scale of your reaction has stopped matching the size of the trigger. You stay composed where composure is expensive, then lose it over something that does not matter.

When the small things cost you more than the big ones

You have probably noticed the shape of it. Under genuine pressure, you are precise. The stakes focus you. Then you get home, or the day slows down, and the irritation arrives with no proportion to it. A tone. A delay. A minor inconvenience. You snap at the team, or at the people you least want to snap at, and a moment later you cannot fully explain why.

You are not overreacting because you have become difficult, or because your standards have slipped. You are reacting to a signal your nervous system is still carrying. The trigger in front of you is small. The charge behind the response is not, because it was never fully released in the first place.

Why this happens

Think of your nervous system the way an engineer thinks about a signal in an allocated time slot. A demand arrives, your sympathetic nervous system mobilises energy to meet it, and once the demand passes, that energy is meant to release so the channel clears for what comes next.

In a high performing life, the demands rarely stop long enough for that release to happen. One meeting closes and the next opens. The mobilisation stays switched on. What should have been a clean pulse becomes a stagnant wave, a charge that never got its window to discharge and instead keeps looping in the background.

This is sympathetic hyperactivity. Your system is running elevated as a baseline, not as an event. And a system running that hot changes how it reads the world. Ordinary input gets scored as threat, because a nervous system already braced for danger has a very low bar for what counts as danger. The open dishwasher is not the problem. It is simply the moment your system finally finds something small enough to discharge against.

None of this is a fault in you. It is your nervous system doing exactly what it is built to do, protect you, mobilise you, keep you ready. The response is entirely functional. It has simply stopped being calibrated to the actual size of the events in front of you.

Why the usual fixes fall short

The instinct is to manage the reaction. Count to ten. Reframe the thought. Promise yourself you will stay calm next time. Add more discipline to a system that is already over disciplined.

This works until it does not, and it tends to fail at exactly the wrong moment. Willpower is a top down instruction. It asks the thinking brain to override a response that is being generated much lower down, in a system that is faster than thought and does not take direction from it. You cannot reason your way out of a physiological state.

Worse, the effort of holding the reaction down is itself another demand. You are asking an already loaded system to carry more load. It looks like control from the outside. Inside, the charge is still looping, still waiting for the next small thing to release against. Managing the reaction never touches the state that produces it.

The somatic pathway

Can I just learn to control my reactions instead?
