Why High Performers Can’t Switch Off (And Why Willpower Makes It Worse)

The Off Switch That Stopped Working

You are good at being on. It is part of how you got here. You can hold a room, carry a decision, and stay sharp when the pressure is highest. The problem is not the on. The problem is that you can no longer find the off.

You leave the office and the office comes with you. You sit down to rest and your mind keeps running scenarios. You go on holiday and it takes four days to stop bracing, if it happens at all. At night you are exhausted and wired at the same time, too tired to function and too activated to sleep. You are not lazy and you are not weak. Your nervous system has simply stopped receiving the signal that it is safe to stand down.

This article is about why that off switch stops working in high performers specifically, why the usual advice to relax makes it worse, and what actually returns the system to baseline.

Wired But Tired Is a State, Not a Mood

When your nervous system perceives a demand, it activates the sympathetic nervous system, mobilising you for action. This is designed to be temporary. The demand arrives, you meet it, and the system downshifts into recovery once it perceives that the demand is met.

The difficulty for high performers is that the demands can arrive faster than the system can close each cycle. There is no clean gap between one pressure and the next, keeping the nervous system in a prolonged state of high-alert, and creating sympathetic hyperactivity. Over time it treats sustained activation as the new normal and keeps the engine running whether or not there is anything to run from. That is the “wired but tired” state.

You are depleted because you have been running hot for years, and you are wired because the system has forgotten how to downshift. The mechanism that is meant to bring you back to rest, the recovery branch of your nervous system, has become hard to access. The off switch is still there. Your body has simply lost the habit of using it.

The Allocated Slot That Doesn’t Release

In radio frequency engineering, a signal is transmitted and received within an allocated time slot. Once the transmission is complete, the slot is released. That release is what keeps the system clean. When a slot fails to release, everything built on top of it distorts.

The nervous system operates on the same principle. When a demand arrives, the sympathetic nervous system mobilises the body to respond, and once it is met, the parasympathetic nervous system initiates recovery. This is how it maintains balance.

When the nervous system stays in sympathetic hyperactivity, the brain continues to respond as if the demand is still active, and so does the associated body organ regulated by that area of the brain.

The mind and body stay in a state of readiness. This can show up as difficulty falling asleep, or waking at 3am, when the brain is actively searching for a solution. These are signs that the autonomic nervous system has not yet registered that the demand is over.

Why “Just Relax” Backfires

The standard advice is to slow down, take a break, practise self-care. For a nervous system in sympathetic hyperactivity, this advice often fails, and understanding why is the key to the whole problem.

First, rest is not the same as regulation. You can lie on a beach with a fully activated nervous system and get no recovery at all, because the system is still running. The external setting changed. The signal did not.

Second, high performers tend to approach rest the way they approach everything else, with effort and force. But you cannot force a nervous system to downshift by trying harder. Effort is an activating input. Adding it to an over-activated system confirms the threat rather than clearing it. The harder you try to switch off, the more the system reads the trying as one more demand.

The result is a frustrating loop. You know you need to rest, you cannot rest, and the failure to rest becomes its own source of pressure.

The Way Back to Baseline

Regulation is not about doing less. It is about restoring the system’s ability to complete its cycles, so that activation can rise when you need it and fall when you do not.

The pathway works through sensation rather than thought, because the stuck state lives below language. In broad terms, you learn to bring non-judgemental attention to the physical experience of being activated, to follow that sensation rather than resist it, and in doing so to give the nervous system the “all clear” it has not been receiving. The system recognises that the threat is over, and the stored activation is allowed to discharge.

Done once, this brings relief. Done as a trained skill, it changes the underlying pattern. The goal is to reach the point where you can catch activation as it rises during an ordinary day and let it complete in real time, so it never accumulates into the chronic “always on” state in the first place. That is the difference between managing stress and regulating a nervous system. One is maintenance. The other is capacity.

What Changes When the System Can Downshift Again

When the off switch comes back online, the change is not that you become less capable. It is that your capability stops costing you everything. You recover between demands instead of accumulating them. You sleep and actually wake rested. You come home present instead of still bracing. And the sharpness you rely on becomes something you can sustain rather than something you burn through.

For a high performer, this is the real advantage. Anyone can push hard for a while. The people who last are the ones whose nervous systems can return to baseline, again and again, without being forced.

Where to Begin

Tonight, when the wired-but-tired state shows up, try one thing. Instead of trying to shut your mind off, turn your attention to the physical feeling of being activated. Where is it in your body? What does it actually feel like? Follow it without judging it and without trying to change it. You are not trying to relax. You are giving the nervous system permission to complete a cycle that is still running.
