The Frequency Files: “Raise Your Frequency” Why Lower Brainwave States Are Where Repair and Resolution Happen

“Raise your frequency” has become a common mantra.

You’ve heard it in wellness culture. The implication is clear: higher is better. Wellness circles seem to refer to lower states as if they were heavy, dense, or something to move past.

But when it comes to brainwaves, that’s a misconception. In fact, the lower brainwave states are where repair, coherence, and deep change actually happen, and this is closely related to alpha brainwave state repair.

Let’s look at the numbers.

What Are Brainwaves?

Your brain’s neurons oscillate in rhythmic patterns. These patterns are measured in Hertz (Hz), meaning cycles per second. Different states have different frequencies, and each serves a different function. Achieving an alpha brainwave state is essential for repair in many wellness practices.

Neurons elsewhere in the body oscillate too, but “brainwaves” refers specifically to the brain’s rhythmic activity, which can be measured with EEG.

The Five Brainwave States

Delta (0.5-4 Hz)
Delta is the state of deep, dreamless sleep. It supports repair, restoration, and consolidation. This is the body’s overnight recovery, where physical healing and memory consolidation happen.

Theta (4-8 Hz)
Theta is the state of subconscious access. It is the transition state between sleep and wake. Theta is associated with emotional processing and it is where deep relaxation, drowsiness, and the edges of sleep live. It is also where the boundary between conscious and subconscious becomes accessible.

Alpha (8-12 Hz)
Alpha is the state of calm, relaxed awareness. Alpha is associated with internal focus and attention regulation. This is the state we want more of in our awake life. It reduces external sensory processing and increases internal focus. It gates sensory input and regulates what reaches awareness. Many associate alpha brainwave state repair with these qualities.

Beta (13-30 Hz)
Beta is the brainwave state of alertness and active cognitive engagement. It supports problem-solving, conversation, and task focus. Beta is useful when you need to think, respond, and get things done.

However, spending too long in beta means the nervous system stays in a state of high alert. High beta activity is linked to anxiety, tension, and stress, where the body remains in a state of readiness, even when there’s no immediate demand.

Gamma (30-100+ Hz)
Gamma appears in brief, transient bursts. It is not a sustained state. It occurs during moments of insight, cross-regional communication, and when the brain needs to bind or integrate information.

Gamma normally appears in brief bursts. When it becomes sustained, it is associated with pathological states like epilepsy or depression.

Higher Isn’t Better: The Case for Lower-Frequency Brainwaves

Here is the part most people miss.

Lower-frequency waves have a deeper penetration effect. This is a basic principle of wave propagation: higher frequencies attenuate faster, while lower frequencies penetrate further.

This matters because it means the slower brainwave states are the ones that reach the deeper tissue.

Alpha, in particular, can act as a deep-penetrating carrier for repair and resolution. It is the lowest frequency in the conscious, awake range, and the deepest you can go while still awake and able to direct attention. That’s why it’s the most powerful state for this work. In summary, alpha brainwave state repair is key for deep transformation.

The Misconception

When someone says “raise your frequency,” they are usually speaking metaphorically. They mean: shift toward love, joy, gratitude. That’s a valid aspiration. But when it comes to brainwaves, lower frequencies are the ones that work for repair and resolution. The slower brainwave states are where the nervous system resets, where stagnant patterns complete, and where deep change happens.

What This Means for You

If you’re constantly in beta: alert, thinking, solving, stressing, you’re missing the states where real change occurs. The nervous system needs the slower states to reset, process, and release. This is where capacity expands.
